Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) also referred to as autologous (your own blood by-product) conditioned plasma, is the term given by haematologists in the 1970’s to explain that plasma found in blood has a high concentrate of platelets. Platelets contains growth factors, or proteins that support cell renewal and PRP is now widely used in many branches of medicine to accelerate healing, for skin rejuvenation and as a treatment for alopecia.
What does Platelet Rich Plasma treat?
PPR stimulates the production of collagen and elastin. Collagen gives the skin its firmness and elastin keeps it smooth and tight. Our normal collagen and elastin production begins to slow from our late 20’s and over time we begin to see the visible signs of ageing skin. PRP triggers the body into producing new collagen and elastin to plump out lines and wrinkles, thicken and tighten the skin and give an overall improved texture and tone. PRP can also be used to treat alopecia hair loss.
What happens at the appointment?
The doctor draws a small amount of your own blood, (about the same as if you were having a blood test) from your arm. He then places your blood into a centrifuge machine. The centrifuge spins your blood rapidly and separates out the platelets and plasma which contain the proteins called growth factors.
The doctor then injects the platelet rich plasma back into the treatment area. The whole process should take no longer than 60 minutes.
When injected back into the skin PRP releases the growth factors that stimulate the production of collagen and elastin.
When will I see results?
You will most probably see results immediately, however PRP relies on your own cell renewal so the full effects will be seen in weeks or months. However, unlike Botulimium toxin injections and other fillers you can expect results to last from 18 months to 2 years with good home care skin maintenance and regular visits to the practice.
How many PRP treatments will I need?
The number of treatments the Doctor recommends will depend on factors such as the condition of your skin and the effect you are wanting to achieve. You will be given a tailored treatment plan and quotation following your consultation. Patients generally have 3 sessions at four to six weekly intervals and then top ups as and when desired in order to maintain the effect.
Results may vary based on each patient’s physical health, diet and exercise, and adherence to the course of treatments. Any treatment results described in testimonials or photos are not typical for every individual. No treatments will be given unless a clinical need exists based on a consultation, examination and current medical history.
